Economist James Hughes of Rutgers University studies regional economics and has extensive knowledge of the economy of his home state of New Jersey. EarthSky spoke to him in October 2009 about a ballot measure there – scheduled for November 3, 2009 – called the Green Acres Bond Act. It would offer 400 million dollars in bonds to support land and historic preservation efforts in New Jersey. Dr. Hughes supports the measure. He explained why land conservation is profitable for states, and becoming more so.
