A camera aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been orbiting the moon since 2009, acquired the images used in this mosaic of the moon’s north polar region. Doesn’t this image look alien and strange, especially as part of the terrain of an object we’ve seen in our sky all our lives?
Each day, we choose a special image to feature. See all EarthSky Today’s Images here
We first saw this image when NASA used it as their Image of the Day on September 7, 2011. More from NASA about this image
