Hawthorn Tree.

The Hawthorn tree has roots in Celtic mythology and is known in Ireland as a tree of protection. Hawthorn trees are planted near homes and holy wells as they are believed to ward off storm and lightning. Also known as the Fairy Tree, the Hawthorn is believed to be guarded by fairies who live under its roots. Its twisted shape — which I find to be most interesting — is a characteristic of these trees. One common cause of tree spiraling is the stress of prevailing winds (helical stress).

This tree is near my home and I visit it frequently.
