The Cedar Waxwings typically arrive in big flocks in the Austin/Lake Travis area in about mid January. They eat tree and bush berries while here, like: cedar berries, ligustrum berries, hackberry tree berries, nandina berries, possum haw and yaupon berries.. and various vine berries in wooded, undeveloped areas. They are beautiful birds! I love to see them! Notice the spectacular coloring, along with the red tipped wing feathers and yellow at the end of the tail. When they have found as many berries as possible, they move on. I assume they are migrating north this time of year.
