Red-breasted Nuthatches are irruptive migrants, meaning every several years, they migrate south in larger numbers from their usual range in Canada and the Northern US.

We are lucky to be hosting this pair (female on the left, male on the right) this year. There have been. Many reports throughout New Jersey and points south this year.

They are much smaller than the resident White-breasted Nuthatches and have different markings and coloration. Plus they are so much fun to watch!
