Image Details:

The Downy Woodpecker, male, visiting the suet bag feeder. The upper image captures the woodpecker closing its eyes during the pecking. This particular bird visits daily several times to feed. I make the suet by melting beef tallow in a sauce pan and pouring it into large Red Dixie Cups filled with a high protein seed mix of cracked corn, almonds, wheat, white millet, black oil sunflower seeds and red milo. Yesterday's visitors had seven species including - Mourning Doves, Juncos, Chickadees, Goldfinches, House Finches, House Sparrows and the Downy Woodpecker...all at the same time.
