North and east of Seattle is the location of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, a vast expanse of rivers, lakes, and waterfalls that can be reached via hiking trails. The West Fork of Foss River is fed by multiple lakes that can be reached by a trail with the same name that passes Trout Lake, Copper Lake, Little Heart Lake, Delta Lake, and Big Heart Lake. A short side trip with a nearly vertical 1/4-mile climb reveals a hidden gem: Lake Malachite, a vast liquid mirror that reflects the rocky rim it resides in.
