Echinocactus texensis, common name is the Horse Crippler Cactus. This species is native to Texas and New Mexico. Slow growing and it is wider than tall often hidden by grass. Many unwary horses have stepped on them and been crippled by the fierce spines. Hence their common name - horse crippler. Both of my outdoor specimens are potted and enjoy the Utah high mountain desert climate.
