Deerfield Reservoir
November 14, 2017
Deerfield Reservoir is located in the middle of Black Hills National Forest, about 43 miles (70 km) west of Rapid City in South Dakota. The reservoir is created by the Deerfield Dam which was built in the 1940s. It is surrounded by campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launches and the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail. A friend of EarthSky recommends it for stargazing due to its “relatively high elevation of 6,000 feet (1800 m) and minimal extra lighting.”
