Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park
Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is a state park in Shelby County, just 14 miles (23 km) north of Memphis, Tennessee. Please note that while there are no designated stargazing areas, the park is accessible by locals and tourists year-round, and provides ample opportunity for hiking, kayaking, biking, and more, with wide open skies suitable for stargazing. Camping is available at 49 different campsites equipped with table, grill, electrical, and water hookups. One EarthSky reader says it’s “one of the closest places to Memphis for a fairly dark view of the sky. Still some light from the city to the south, but one of the best spots for meteor watching.” The park borders the Mississippi River and contains two lakes — Poplar Tree Lake and Lake Piersol.
