Sanibel Island, Florida
Sanibel Island is an easily accessible barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Ft. Myers, Florida and has had a Dark Sky Ordinance since 2000. “The majority of the island is protected land, and the entire island must comply with dark sky lighting. Beautiful night beach walks.” With 15 miles (24 km) of beaches and 25 miles (40 km) of bike paths, the coordinates here do not pinpoint an exact location on the island, but you will have to look around to find your favourite spot(s). One example is Turner beach with “the most breathtaking sky views imaginable”, where Sanibel connects to its sister island Captiva with the same favorable sky conditions. Just look out for sea turtle nests!
