Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Idaho
July 1, 2016
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is located 18 miles (29 km) west of Arco, Idaho, on U.S. Highway 20/26/93. Site of the annual Craters of the Moon Star Party (hosted by the Idaho Falls Astronomical Society, www.ifastro.org), Craters of the Moon is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; however, snows can close the Scenic Loop Drive from November to April. Apollo astronauts trained at Craters of the Moon to get an idea of the topography and volcanic rocks they would encounter on the lunar surface. On a clear night you can look up at the real craters of the moon while its reflected light shines down upon the Craters of the Moon landscape beneath your feet.
