Estimates place the number of giant pandas in the world today at 1,600-3,000. They are incredibly rare and endangered. That’s why this week’s announcement (August 12, 2014) of panda triplets at a zoo in southern China is so unexpected and exciting.
Deborah Byrd created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and EarthSky.org in 1994. Today, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of this website.
