Nature's abstract! This is a giant clam embedded in the intertidal zone at Christmas Island Kiribati. The tide is just beginning to come in and as the water touches the animals the intertidal zone comes alive. With the bright equatorial light the thin layer seawater refracts and distorts the light and the objects just under the surface producing the effect shown. The giant clam is the "purple lips:
