Killdeer are shorebirds (plovers) that you can see without going to the beach. They are solitary, and do not gather in flocks. The Killdeer is known to sometimes distract predators from the nest by feigning injury, dragging itself along the ground, dragging its wings like they are broken. It's pretty entertaining watching them.
