This is a White-crowned sparrow which was foraging in the brush during my hike along the Jordan River Trail Sunday afternoon. Many small birds are easily attracted by making a "shwishing" sound with one's mouth...kind of like fake whispering sounds. Be still, make the sounds, the birds, if nearby, will fly in to check out the source of the noise. Often I have birds come to investigate me as close as arm's length away, if I'm very still. Normal distance is 6-10 feet away moving from limb to limb to get better/different angles of view. This sparrow was content where it was and watched until I walked away at about 10 feet.

The list of bird sightings on today's hike: Canada Geese, Mallard ducks, Robins, Northern Flickers, Dark Eyed Juncos, Starlings, Magpies, American Coot, Spotted Towhees and this White-crowned sparrow.
