Sunspots are the temporary dark spots on the surface of the Sun; they are caused by disturbances in the Sun’s magnetic field welling up to the photosphere. Sunspots appear dark because they are cooler than the rest of the Sun’s surface. They form at areas where magnetic fields are particularly strong. These magnetic fields are so strong that they keep some of the heat within the Sun from reaching the surface.
