Image Details:

Eranthis hyemalis flowering in the wild, above dry oak leaves of last year. The species was brought to the US from Europe and now grow both as an ornamental plant and in the wild. According to Wikipedia, the Latin specific epithet hyemalis means "winter-flowering", while the name of the genus is a compound of the Greek elements Er 'Spring' and anthos 'flower' - so named for its early flowering. Very beautiful, but poisonous when consumed by humans and other mammals.
