I was thrilled to locate this Pileated Woodpecker by hearing the hammering sound up in a tree. It's strong pointed bill is often described as a chisel, leaving marks rectangular in shape on soft and decaying wood. It is the largest woodpecker in North America (16-19 inches in length).
