Slightly tweaked with AuroaHDR

This early morning’s partial lunar eclipse was very enticing to watch with the little family. We tracked it from the very start of the penumbra and followed it until maximum eclipse. How the brightness of the Moon slowly succumbed to the ingress of the hard shadow known as the umbra, kept us mesmerized. Afocally, we were clicking those smart phones at every nuance of distinct colors rendered by the enveloping shadow of the Earth. One thing to note besides the reddening of the Moon is also the tenuous but noticeable magenta or blue color fringe around the red core of the umbral shadow. As can be seen in this image, the blue fringe is noticeable in between the ruddy red and the bright white area of the lunar limb. The sun’s rays passing through the upper stratosphere penetrates the ozone layer which absorb red light thus allowing only the bluer rays to pass.
