I saw this grey heron (ardea cinerea) on an afternoon hike in Nam Sang Wai. Nam Sang Wai lies in the northern New Territories close to Hong Kong’s border with mainland China, and it’s an ecologically important wetland area that hosts many migratory birds over winter, including the grey heron. This large wading bird has grey, black and white feathers and a yellow bill. It can stand still for long periods in water waiting for prey to swim past.
