Swans pause in central Alberta on their way south for the winter. Graceful & beautiful, the Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) is North America’s largest species of waterfowl, weighing in at a whopping 26+ pounds (on average) with a wing span of 10 feet. Once on the brink of extinction, with numbers below 100 in the 1930’s (audobon.org), today their numbers are recovering & they are considered a conservation success story .
