It's now fall mushroom season. This is a California king bolete mushroom, with graceful hands of a musician and mushroom expert to give an idea of the large size of the mushroom. He identified this as a California king bolete "Boletus edulis var. grandedulis." Edulis in Latin means "eatable" or "edible". So yes, it is edible. We didn't harvest it though; we left it for others to see and admire. There were two of them close together. King bolete mushroom can grow into massive proportion. This one is at least 14 inches in diameter.
