It seemed like another pretty twilight on the Pacific Ocean, but looking closely at the photo there are rays radiating from the position of the sun below the horizon. I learned that these crepuscular rays or "God rays" are sunbeams that originate when the sun is below the horizon, during twilight hours. They extend over the western sky radiating from the position of the sun below the horizon. Crepuscular is derived from the Latin crepusculum meaning twilight, thus accurately applied to the after sunset phenomenon.
