Great blue heron resting on a dead tree branch. It's on a cliff of rugged basalt rocks on a cove by the Pacific Ocean. The absence of long gray-white plumes on chest, neck, and back, also the dark upper bill indicate that this is a juvenile. Adults have a uniformly yellow bill. According to ODFW (Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) they're one of the most widespread and familiar waterbirds in Oregon that frequent many different habitats, being highly adaptable. It is the largest heron in North America, standing approximately four feet tall.
