On 24th March, Mercury will reach maximum eastern elongation, meaning it is most suitable to see in the evening sky. Even though this photo shows the innermost planet as a mere dot of light, Mercury is about 52% illuminated by the Sun, at a distance of 47 million km (29 million mi), shining at -0.41 magnitude.
