Spectacular Volcanic Sunset.
On Wednesday 7th February there was a spectacular volcanic sunset in Mutare with anticrepuscular rays visible in the antisolar direction a quarter of an hour after sundown followed by a twilight arch with crepuscular rays above the sunset point which persisted for another 20 minutes. This follows the reappearance of volcanic aerosols from the January 2022 eruption of the Hunga-Tonga volcano 10 days ago after an almost complete absence of more than a month. It is amazing that after more than two years there should still be sufficiently dense patchy concentrations of stratospheric aerosols to produce such pronounced optical effects.
