This is a heiau ( temple for Hawaiian) called Pu'u Kohola located on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Pu'u Kohola translates to "Hill of the Whale" and it was built by the Hawaiians in 1790 under the rule of King Kamehameha I to appease the war god. The King was told by a seer that if he would to built and offer a temple to the war god, he will unite all the islands and will rule over them. You can also see a offering tower, or lele, in the middle of the photo. This area receives very little rain and is normally hot and dry. Unfortunately, I did not spot any whales breaching.
