An egret on an alderwood tree by the river. He was busy preening, a serious and necessary activity, and this photo was shot in between preening positions.
The scientific name of the great egret is Ardea alba. Ardea means heron in Latin, alba means white. It is closely related to the gray heron, great blue heron, Pacific heron, and other species within the same genus. The egrets' diet consist of fish, mice, frogs, snakes, crayfish, and insects. Their bill strikes are extremely fast and accurate.
The great egret is a symbol of the National Audubon Society.
