Around our backyard are sunflowers of various sizes. This one was illuminated by subdued morning light, and I wanted to shoot it in square format. Sunflowers are a composite of dozens of flowers, not one flower. Each flower in the center disc has anthers that produce pollen, and stamens that collect the pollen from pollinators like bees and produce a single seed. The rays around the disc are also each a flower that is sterile. The sunflower can be a composite, like this one, all disc, or all rays. Asteraceae is also the largest family of flowers in the northern hemisphere.
