I took this shot looking WNW from the jetty at Webster Beach Park (Monroe County, New York, USA) on Thursday evening (29 June) during probably the worst of the recent smoke episode we endured in Western New York State. Note the red color in the glitter column on the water, even though sunset was still an hour away! As the sun dropped, the glitter column became steadily dimmer and narrower. The red color is because the smoke particles absorb the blue, green, and yellow, leaving only the red wavelengths to reach and then reflect off the surface of the water. Ordinarily on a clear evening, a glitter column will take on a saturated red color but only when the sun is close to setting (due to molecular scattering). Here however the smoke is absorbing the light (not scattering it) and only red makes it through.

PS: Let's all hope for heavy rain up in northern Canada to douse these terrible fires.
