Spiranthes sinensis (The Chinese Spiranthes or Chinese Lady's-Tresses) is said to be the smallest orchid in the world. It blooms around the Qingming Festival in early April, with its flowers arranged in a spiral on the stem, like a red dragon. However, during the rest of the year, it can be easily mistaken for weeds due to its similar appearance, and is often ignored and removed as a result. Additionally, as an important medicinal herb, it is often overexploited, making it difficult to find in the wild. Spiranthes sinensis has been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Usually, only one or two Spiranthes sinensis are occasionally seen in the wild. Fortunately, perhaps carried over by the wind or birds, a large area of Spiranthes sinensis has grown on the rooftop of my house! Every year in early April, I look forward to the blooming of the Spiranthes sinensis, watching as the small flowers spiral up the stem one by one, bringing me great joy.
