The Cosmic Couple.

Last night, we had the opportunity to image the moon and pleiades open cluster together. This image was taken during moonset.

According to hindu mythology, pleiades or krittika is the wife of moon. However, the moon has a total of 27 wives and rohini (or aldebaran) was his favourite. Angered by this, the other 26 wives complained to their father Daksha who cursed chandra that his vody will perish. However, Chandra prayed to Lord Shiva who minimized the effect and blessed him with the regeneration of his body once he perished.

And this, according to the mythology, is the reason behind moon's waxing and waning phases.

The image is a focus stack of 2 images (one for the sky and one for the foreground).
