I captured this colorful image of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) with its short broad dust tail early Sunday morning from my Bortle 7 backyard. The green glow around the comet's head is likely caused by the excitation of diatomic carbon by ultraviolet light from the Sun. The comet is currently about 64 million kilometers from Earth. Its closest approach to Earth will be on 2 February. This is a long period comet that originated in the Oort Cloud beyond the orbit of Pluto. It will not return to the inner solar system for millions of years or may even leave the solar system. The comet is now visible with binoculars from a dark sky site and may become visible to the unaided eye by the end of January.
