A Japanese white-eye (zosterops japonicas) feeds on nectar in a Hong Kong gordonia tree.

Hong Kong gordonia (polyspora axillaris) is a winter-blossoming small tree or shrub that is native to Hong Kong. Its colloquial name, fried egg plant, aptly describes its lovely, eye-catching flowers that are often shed whole, “sunny side up”, from the tree.

The bright yellow ring of pollen around this white-eye’s beak reminded me of cream on a cat’s whiskers, growing thicker as this active little bird enjoyed a bountiful feast of floral fried egg yolks this warm January morning.
