Hand-held Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 in sunset mode.

Young Crescent Moon barely visible on right-hand-side of brightly coloured volcanic sunset display at 5.40 pm.
On Wednesday 1st June the Young 4% illuminated Crescent Moon was observed appearing at 5.35 pm and then setting in another spectacular volcanic sunset. The display was so bright that the Moon was at first difficult to see but it became clearer as the light faded with Earthshine becoming visible as it set behind the summit of Transmitter Hill shortly after 6 pm. Volcanic sunsets (and sunrises) have become almost daily events due to a more widespread and uniform distribution of aerosols in the stratosphere from the massive Hunga-Tonga eruption in January.
