Image Details:

RS Ophiuchi is a binary system composed of a red giant and white dwarf. It recently displayed a temporary increase in brightness as the result of the white dwarf igniting accreted matter from the red giant and triggering a thermonuclear explosion. This recurrent nova occurs on a roughly 15 year cycle.
