The 2 front stars of the Big Dipper are called Pointers because they point to Polaris The North Star. The small constellation Ursa Minor is also an asterism called the Little Dipper. Polaris is the brightest star in Ursa Minor and the closest bright star to the north celestial pole. While other stars around it move, the North Star, Polaris, stays still. When you are looking at Polaris, you are facing north. It’s one of the most important stars for navigation.
