I was on vacation in Maine and, having left hat and gloves at home, was not prepared for the cold and wind (50 degrees with wind gusts up to 18 mph). This was my first attempt at photographing a solar eclipse and did not have an opportunity to practice beforehand, so I was quite apprehensive about lenses, exposures, filters, and procedures, etc. In the end, none of the advice in the many "how to" and "what to" articles worked for me (or my particular equipment?) and my best shots were taken at exposures very different than what I had read about. At the Seaview Campground in Eastport, Maine (20' above sea level) I was happy to find a spot where I could shoot across the Passamaquoddy Bay to it's ENE shore where the eclipse would become first visible at just several degrees above the horizon. This shot (f/8 at 1/2000" - ISO 100, 300mm) was taken at 5:00am (eclipse began in Eastport at 4:38am and was .92 degrees above the horizon at 4:49am) caught a seagull flying by which I feel adds interest and includes the landscape's treetops. After the eclipse reached maximum at 5:35am, the sky clouded over and that was the end of that!
