A basic concept of the Earthshine : if moonshine is sunlight reflected off the moon to the earth, then earthshine is sunshine reflected off the earth to the moon. This waning crescent moon is seen best during the night or in the wee hours when we don't see sun. Any reflected light will be weak versus direct light. In other words, we need to see the sun reflect off the earth to the moon and back to here. This waning crescent earthshine moon was clearly visible after it had risen from the East this morning. The moon was approximately 405,627 km from Earth. This may not be the best Earthshine photo, however a closer zoom to the moon allows one to see the prominent moon mare on the moon which is labelled here. As the moon gets more slender for the next 2 days , the Earthshine would be even more clearer for one to see. Wherever the community are now, do look up for the waning crescent moon to enjoy the Earthshine Moon which will be visible for the next 2 days.
