Simple Auto-correct levels

Image Details:

Too far North Dec at 42 degrees to use one of my telescope mounts, I leaned the camera against a windscreen support to stabilize image. Field of view is 4.6 degrees by 6.9 degrees. If I push the image deeper you can see that the tail extends off-frame. With this background and range you can see the bifurcated tail... is this an optical density effect?
