Harkers Island
Harkers Island is a tiny island, perfect for a day trip just off the coast of North Carolina. This island — made up largely of residential homes and private communities — offers some of the most unique views of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, as well as boat launches and marinas to explore a quieter, calmer side of the coast. However while a beautiful destination for casual gazing, the area is not recommended for serious observations; the beaches are, for the most part, unaffected by artificial illumination, providing a dark and open sky for reasonable stargazing, while some local organizations like the Crystal Coast Stargazers have hosted stargazing events on occasion. Hotels, vacation lodges, and campgrounds are all available within the island. For more information, please visit online or call the Visitor Center at 252-726-8148.
