Desert lichens grow less than a millimeter a year and can live for centuries or even thousands of years. The orange one is a Caloplaca species and the gray green one is of the foliose or leafy families of lichens. To me they are a beautiful complex life form that is a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga.
