I was driving yesterday and saw a very bright rainbow at the end of the road. There are at least four rainbows in the photo. The first two are the very clear primary and secondary rainbows, and there is a third special ‘reflection rainbow’. The strangely oriented bow curving between the primary and secondary is a primary 'reflection rainbow' produced by sunlight beaming upwards after reflection from calm water or wet sand. In this instance the sun's rays were reflected from another bay behind the camera.
And the fourth bow? Look at the waterlogged road ahead, there is a fragment of bow. This is a 'reflected rainbow'! In addition, if you look closely, you can also see the supernumerary rainbows on the inside of the primary rainbow. Thest rainbows are really amazing!
