Makaopuhi crater is the largest pit crater along the East Rift Zone of Kilauea volcano. We started from the Mauna Ulu Trail, and connect to the Napau Trail to reach Makaopuhi. The trail mainly follows the rock cairns, or ahu, across lava flows and pit craters. Very exposed to the sun and shadeless. Along the way, we spotted many steam active steam vents, reminding us that the ground below is still active.
