A herd of Roosevelt elk a few miles east of the Oregon coast. Two juvenile elks and an adult are in the middle of the photo. Leadership of an elk herd usually is provided by an older female with an offspring, but other females with offspring assume leadership duties at times.

Roosevelt elk are the third largest land mammal in North America. They are named after former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, and nicknamed "Rosies." In the summer they are copper brown in color with dark manes, in the winter they are lighter in color with dark manes.
