Source : Mare Imbrium , the "Sea of Showers" or "Sea of Rains" is a vast lava plain within the Imbrium Basin on the Moon and is one of the larger craters in the Solar System. The Imbrium Basin formed from the collision of a proto-planet during the Late Heavy Bombardment. Basaltic lava later flooded the giant crater to form the flat volcanic plain seen today. The basin's age has been estimated using uranium–lead dating methods to 3938 ± 4 million years ago, the diameter of the impactor has been estimated to be 250 ± 25 km. The Moon's maria (plural of mare) have fewer features than other areas of the Moon because molten lava pooled in the craters and formed a relatively smooth surface. Mare Imbrium is not as flat as it was originally thought, because later events have altered its surface.

This picture of the moon was taken from my point and shoot camera. Looking at the names of the features, examples of the some of the craters that are named after famous people :
Plato - Greek philosopher Plato. It is located on the northeastern shore of the Mare Imbrium
Copernicus - Copernicus is named after the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.
Cassini - A lunar impact crater that is located in the Palus Nebularum, at the eastern end of Mare Imbrium and named after astronomers Giovanni Cassini and Jacques Cassini.
Aristillus is a prominent lunar impact crater that lies in the eastern Mare Imbrium. It was named after Greek astronomer Aristyllus. Directly to the south is the smaller crater Autolycus, while to the southwest is the large Archimedes.

The above image was taken from a larger waning crescent moon picture that I had cropped to focus on the Imbrium Basin. Despite the moon being more than 350,000 km away from Earth, it is amazing to see it so close with a small camera !
