A magical sighting! The Snowy Owl population is considered "vulnerable" status. It is estimated that there are about 100,000 globally, about 28,000 adult population in North America. They are very large, and due to all the feathers needed for insulation (and feathers on their feet like slippers) from the Arctic temps, they are the heaviest owl. It is considered an irruption when they head south from the Arctic to the U.S. Where I spotted this one is at the grasslands where the short-eared owls and northern harriers hunt for voles. There are two in the area that we know of. It is going to be an interesting Winter!
