Phoenix-See is a lake and a newly developed recreational area and urban development in the south-east end of the city of Dortmund. It has high-end homes, commercial offices, a floating stage with a marina and a promenade with restaurants. A hill on the east side of the lake was formerly the site for a blast furnace and steel plant, and is now a place for walking, jogging, cycling, skating, resting and stargazing. A member of the EarthSky community said of this spot (in 2016): “All soil excavated to create the lake has been piled up to a nice hill which can now be used to gaze at a beautiful sunset and the stars, of course. There are no trees blocking your view. It is accessible even for wheelchairs. On a usual evening chances are you will be completely alone.”
Deborah Byrd created the EarthSky radio series in 1991 and founded EarthSky.org in 1994. Today, she serves as Editor-in-Chief of this website. She has won a galaxy of awards from the broadcasting and science communities, including having an asteroid named 3505 Byrd in her honor. A science communicator and educator since 1976, Byrd believes in science as a force for good in the world and a vital tool for the 21st century. "Being an EarthSky editor is like hosting a big global party for cool nature-lovers," she says.
