Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms is a city in South Carolina on the slender barrier island of the same name, located right along the Atlantic Ocean, 15 miles (24 km) by road east of downtown Charleston. Covering a narrow strip of land, the island just hugs the beach and is connected to the mainland by road. The Lowcountry Stargazers astronomy club (http://www.lowcountrystargazers.org/) has occasionally used the Wild Dunes Resort Facility at the island for astronomy outreach events. A stargazer shared the following with EarthSky: “The beach has no lights out over the water, so it is a perfect place to relax and stargaze. The Milky Way is even often visible! It is close to restrooms and restaurants, and—after 8 p.m.—public parking is free.”
